Brightside Entry | GIRLS

Girls has to be hands down the funniest, most engaging show that I have watched this year--and that's saying a lot because (being a young adult still not in touch with the fact that adolescence is a thing of the past) my U-Torrent gets a lot of use; my free time is spent doing either reading, writing or watching TV shows.

I have Trizha and our hungover conversation while sprawled on Ron's carpet listening to the Pierces to thank for the discovery of this show. "You have to watch it," TKo said. And I take my friends' advice very seriously. ;) Good thing too, it turns out--HBO's Girls has surpassed two of the serieses that I've been watching and re-watching: Raising Hope & MTV's Awkward.

See, while Raising Hope & Awkward both have the humor down pat, I find that their situations are more amusing than relatable. :)) Raising Hope is hilarious because of the ridiculous situations they get themselves into--the best example being the show's premise: Jimmy Chance (the main character) getting a serial killer (who is eventually executed) pregnant. Awkward is wonderful because Jenna and her friends and family are very quirky and the solutions they find to their problems--as in the Dead Stacy episode. But yeah: I'm never going to impregnate a serial killer or be in Highschool again so as much as I adore these shows I think that watching Girls has highlighted a certain age or sitch-difference for myself in relation to these two shows that I had previously thought set the bar for my Best Comedy Shows I've Seen Lately list.

Girls on the other hand, begins with (just a small spoiler) the lead character Hannah (played brilliantly by Lena Dunham) having dinner with her parents where they tell her that they are no longer going to support her financially as a) she graduated 2 years ago and b) she is not being paid for her internship and it's about time that internship turned into a job. Hannah then proceeds to say, "I could've been a drug addict, you know. You guys have no idea how lucky you are to have me." HAHAHA That right there is just the exact situation that I find everyone I know is in. All the other characters are equally relatable and their perspectives are so skewed sometimes, it's hilarious. The dialogue and the script are brilliant as well. I also love that this is finally being written for my (our) generation: the people who are in their early twenties now. The only other show that I find is written about people our age is Gossip Girl--and while I love gossip girl, let's face it: the scandalous lives of Manhattan's elite are interesting but we're never going to be able to relate to that fully because we have to work and we can't just scheme about how to let this week's bag out of the cat.

It's so refreshing to see a quippy, sometimes sarcastic, funny show about girls in their early twenties who are trying to stay employed/afloat while (as is the trend with our peeps) struggling with the fact that their parents are still helping them out to some extent. I also love that the show talks about sex and deals with it in a way that is blunt and explicit but not offensive. I hate shows that sugarcoat sex and call it "for women"; it's insulting and irritating. One of the characters on Girls, Jessa (who is gorgeous) has the funniest views on sex and STDs like HPV and AIDS. There is in fact, a whole episode tackling the matter along with abortion and unwanted (not on purpose, the show puts it) pregnancy. And the show is written in a way that is able to give you different views on the matter without insulting your own views or alienating you in any way. One of the characters is also a virgin, which is refreshing to see in a TV world where virginity is either hyped up or ignored completely, as if no  one in the world could possible be a virgin. And it's nice because you get to see that character develop and deal with that situation. None of the "I want it to be special" stereotypes here either. Women in this series are dealt with as real people and aren't Madonna-ed but aren't Whore-d either. It's perfect.

Anyway, yeah. :)) This show made my day. Lena Dunham x Judd Apatow x everyone on the cast =perfection. But please don't take my word for it, go and download it for yourself; it's just on its first season--episodes 1-7 are now available online from EZTV. ;)

Tell me what you think when you've watched it!
