Today, I finished reading Margaret Atwood's The Blind Assassin and wow--it does not disappoint. I'm always a little more critical, I think of lengthier works that burn slowly; the build-up always warrants a grand sort of ending. (A bang, not a whimper, Ms. Mabi David once told me at this workshop i attended)
And that it does. This book broke my heart and slapped me in the face and made me understand everyone's motives, more or less. I don't mean I ended up liking all the characters but I more or less understood why they did what they did. I didn't like the narrator at first and I still don't quite like her but I understand why she is haunted and it's really quite tragic what she's had to go through. The way this burns (although in quite a different way altogether) reminds me of Audrey Niffenegger's Her Fearful Symmetry--you're not quite sure what you're looking for until it hits you in the face, full force.
Go read it yourself; it's a wonderful book. :D The language is wonderful and everything about it--the story within a story within the story--is intriguing.
I am now focusing on reading the third book from George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice & Fire series: Storm of Swords. Is it odd that I've developed a crush on Mance Rayder? ;)
