This book is incredible. My friend Ron lent me this book last week (before the quasi-party got quasi-crazy) when we were over at his place and wow--I think this is one of the best short story compilations that I've ever read. It threw all of the Ian McEwan and (I must say) even Donald Barthelme, who held the spot previous out of my head. This book is refreshing and deals with all the things that I think people are afraid to talk about: the mix of bitter and sweet in life and exactly how gorey and gritty those things can be. The short fiction found here talks about sexuality and childhood--something that I've always felt needed more attention--in a way that doesn't come off as entirely fetishistic or for show. It also deals with the subtleties of things both domestic and fanciful; the author is able to write it so that the story becomes both mundane and surreal (at the same time).
And that is all that I'm willing to say. Please, please go and get the book yourself! My favorites are: Esther in the Night, Adults Alone, Chunky in the Heat, Dollhouse, Slumber Party. If when you guys get your hands on a copy, please, please let me know how you find it! :D
