Favorite Things | Take Me To The Beach

I was hesitant to write about this, because it seems so expected of someone from Manila or from the Philippines, but what the hell--I have decided not to give in to to the temptations of my inner hipster and write about this anyway, despite how typical of a thing it might be. 

Anyway, yeah. I love swimming--I prefer swimming at the beach, or being near the ocean but a good, clean swimming pool isn't too bad either. When I was younger, I thought the Little Mermaid was the most absurd fairytale in the world; why would anyone want to be human if they were already a mermaid? I mean, then you would have everything you wanted: you could lay on the shore and go swimming 24/7. Instead of having the option to swim, you would have the option to lay on a rock sunning your beautiful hair. But of course, this whole thing just further amplifies the theme of the Little Mermaid: we never want to be what we are. 

I can spend hours swimming, although I try not to these days--sun damage is terrifying. But yeah. Everything seems to be made better beside a pool or by the beach--drinking, breakfast, merienda, sleeping, smoking, laughing. I remember a period in time when I used to jump into the pool at my friend Ina's house every time there would be a party and I'd have something to drink. The water just felt so relieving against the summer heat (since Ina's birthday is in May, this was mostly during the summer) and blood rushing to my face because of the alcohol.
