Tagged | My Life's OST

So my friend Lorri tagged me today and asked me to share my life's OST if they were to make a biopic of my life. Because I've spent a good deal of my time as an adolescent (and admittedly, even as a "young adult", whatever that means) watching movies like Sixteen Candles and Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist, I really liked this tag. My friend Lorri calls me a hipster and as I've said before, while I don't exactly approve of that title because in general it can be frustrating to be characterized so generally, I don't deny it either because well--I do a lot of things that a "hipster" is supposed to do. :)) So yeah, sue me.

Anyway, if my life were a movie it'd probably be some coming-of-age shiz because I am still young and life is just a continuous coming-of-age really. :)) But yeah. Here are a couple of the songs that I've listed down as part of My Life's OST:

1. Opening Song--To which I am revealed waking up in the morning, on a bus to school, half-asleep. This is exactly how I'd like to start off said movie because this is how I start of most days anyway. For this I'm picking The National's All The Wine because the verse is hilarious and basically, the person singing the song is talking himself up. And I feel like that's what I do in the mornings (although of course, not that degree--you'll know what I mean when you listen to the song).
Favorite lines: I carry the dollhouse, safe on my shoulders
Through the black city, night lights are on in the corners
And everyone's sleeping upstairs
All safe and sound

2. The Contemplative Song--To which I am shown doing the mundane things I do like make coffee or read or have a cigarette or sleep or whatever.
For this I'd pick The Shins' Those To Come. I'm a huge believer of life's real meaning being in mundane, kind of boring moments. It's like money I guess--P20 doesn't seem like a lot but you don't get to a thousand without that first P20. So yeah.
Favorite Lines: Eyeless in the morning sun you were
Pale and mild, a modern girl. Taken with thought,
Still prone to care. Making tea in your underwear.

3. The Unrequited Love Song--Who hasn't been through this right? So, yeah. For this one I'm going with a classic by The Cure because a voice like Robert Smith's is perfect for that sharp type of angst. This is hands-down my favorite The Cure song.

Favorite Lines: Remembering
You standing quiet in the rain
As I ran to your heart to be near
And we kissed as the sky fell in
Holding you close
How I always held close in your fear

4. The Faux-Boyfriend Song--I think everyone who's going to grow up is going to have a faux-boyfriend. As I mentioned in yesterday's Brightside Entry post, I dont believe in there being such a thing as your opposite gender bestfriend without someone being attracted to someone. This especially applies if you have a boyfriend. If you have a boyfriend and he's not the one you're calling at night, then you konw--there's something wrong with that. I've been in and out of enough faux-boyfriendships with men who've claimed to be my bestfriend to know this. :)) And so, for this I'm picking this angst-ridden but thoroughly enjoyable song by Tegan & Sara. This is Nineteen from their The Con album (please, go download it or get your hands on a copy if you like this).
I picked the live performance because a) T&S are great live and b) I think this better captures the emotion of the song, although the album version is still definitely worth the listen.
Favorite Lines: I felt the need to lay down beside you
and tell youI feel you in my heart and I don't even know you

5. The Driving Song--Every good movie (and every life, I am hoping) has a song that you just have to have on the radio while you're driving. Or there has to be at least one song that you'd hope to someday be driving/riding in a car to. So, yeah. Mine is Stay Away by Rooney and hands down, everything about this song--the guitar riff, Robert Schwartzman's voice--makes me want to get into a car and drive (or get someone to drive me because I can't drive for shiz) away into the sunset or whatever.
Favorite lines: Make a move on me baby, I can't be the one who's always taking chances.
See me down so you'll get down, no you've got me all wrong--
I just wanna kiss your lips and you kiss back.

6. The Smoking Song--Okay, now let me put up a disclaimer here: I'm not encouraging anyone to smoke, I'm simply saying that in my life smoking has been a very huge growing up part of my life and so I feel that there must be a song for it. And I choose Cat Stevens' The Wind.
Favorite lines: the whole song. I seriously cannot choose.

7. The Dancing Around By Yourself Song--I did this a lot when I was 17. Nowadays, I go Johnny Rockets on everyone and just do it wherever because a) I figure no one cares and b) it's so pretentious 17-year-old to do it alone in your room, much more when in your underwear, so yeah. For this, I'll go with The Future Freaks Me Out by Motion City Soundtrack. This song is special because I discovered it on the afternoon I hung out with this drug addict faux-boyfriend of mine in his friend's dorm and I realized that a) I needed to download this on Limewire (yeah, this was back in 2007, so sue me) and b) I was never coming back and hanging out with these people again.
Favorite lines: I rock the haro sport,
I rock the cowgirl blues, I rock too fast for love
I'm footloose in my velcro shoes.

8. The F THAT Song--I've encountered lots of a-holes thus far in my life, so yeah. This one pain particular goes out to this one person who I uber trusted and who just wouldn't listen to anything that me or my friends would say in defense of his own negligence. One person who, if he died, I would not feel bad at all--and that's saying a lot given my Catholic upbringing; I can feel guilty for almost anything. But yeah. This is my anger song. :)) The Donnas are great at making "F that, you you-know-what" songs; they're absolutely bad ass and were a hooj inspiration to me and my bandmates when we were still in a band.
Favorite Lines: When you skip steps on the way up,
The steps have a way of catching up.

9. The Nostalgia Song--Okay, initally I wanted In My Life by The Beatles but I kept having flashbacks to my grandmother's 90th birthday so, yeah. Definitely not that song, then. I'm going with another Beatles song though--I'm not sure why this makes me nostalgic but it does.
This is She Said, She Said by The Beatles.
Favorite Lines: I know what it is to be sad
And she's making me feel like
I'd never been born

10. The End Credits Song--Okay, so this might be a bit rushed but I didn't want to put more than 10 songs on here because it seems a bit overwhelming. But yeah. My closing credits song, I'd like to be something upbeat and hopeful but still a tinge melancholic. :)) So, I've decided to end this with something from The Strokes. This is 1251 by The Strokes; in 2005, I sold my cellphone to get to buy this record (because my parents just didn't understand hahaha)--this is from Room On Fire, one of the best records I've ever listened to methinks.
Favorite Lines: Talk to me now I'm older,
Your friend told you 'cause I told her,
Friday nights have been lonely.
Change your plans and then phone me.

Aand that's it! Obviously, as this is a tag, I tag the following people--whom I know both from being online and in real life: Denise, Alessi, Marz, Joy, Ina, Lorri & Joelle! :D If you have a blog and you wanna do this tag, go ahead. Leave me your URL below!

  1. On the playlist:
Wooh, thanks for accepting my tag! I will be listening to these songs as soon as I get enough free time. And I will comment again once I've listened to all of them.

I wonder if 'Fall Behind Me' is dedicated to this certain person I'm thinking of.

    On unrequited love:
I don't believe in it, but I like this choice. XD

    On best friends:
Lol I agree with the whole opposite gender best friend thing. I have had 'best friends' who at some point would confess and eventually make me feel terrible for not reciprocating such feelings. Of course, I've been guilty of doing the same thing—labelling the guys I like as 'best friends' because, for some reason, the term comes with a sense of ownership. Does that make sense?

Where would you put Carlos though, given this best friends theory? Also, would this mean that you believe couples should be best friends too and not just boyfriend/girlfriend/whatever? (Woooooooh KeaNa!)

As for me, aside from Carlos, I actually can't think of a guy friend who I can call a 'best friend' so I don't understand how that works. o__O

Also, I generally don't agree with the labelling friends that way because I'm afraid it might make other people feel left out. There are times when I think, 'Oh Angie's my girl best friend' but I'm just as close with Joelle and so there's this terrible feeling that I've got favourites even amongst friends. o__O

Gah, apologies for the really long comment. I've just got a lot of feelings about the whole 'best friends' thing. XD

  2. No problem of course. I love long comments! :)) It's like a novel, what up insanely long thought. :))

    1. Playlist: YAY lemme know what you think and please post one up as well I'd love to listen to it!

    2. I get what you mean. "best friend" can be a label for something you don't want to manifest into something more--it's a way of ensuring that you keep all the good things about your relationship (special treatment) and avoid the bad. In this case, I'd put Carlos in that gray lesbian sister area. Cause like, as far as guys who aren't Keav go, he's deffo one of my bffs but it's different you know? I'm not going to like call him crying in the middle of the night or whatever. And yeah I deffo believe couples should be bestfriends! (WOOOOH LORRLOS!) :D Keav is my bestfriend, deffo and before anyone else, I'd go to him muna. I heart my guy friends but I love them too much to let things get too complicated.

    3. About friend-labelling: I know what you mean. What I call them's more like pet names between us. Like BFF or Bestfriend or whatever. <33 I'm pretty picky so if you're my friend, I must love you pretty damn much already. hahaha :)

    1. I forgot to mention:

      1. BEATLES efuwn9fnirengn9ewr +32759759375 friendship points. Then again, Noel hates the Beatles and we're still friends lol.

      2. These ship names are funny. XD And d'aww I miss the KeaNa posts. XD But I'm sure you guys are doing fine. True, I guess the whole sister or brother thing makes sense. Maybe I should consider Raph a lesbian-ish sister—no, he's still 'manly'.

I actually admire you girls who can get along well with guys, mostly because you're not prejudiced or whatever. I actually don't like guys that much, so it's surprising that I get along well with sila Chubz and Luigi. For the longest time, though, opposite sex friendships for me were impossible and I always marvelled at how people could do it. Yes, I was a tomboy at some point, but I wasn't really 'one of the boys'.

      3. Yes, picky people feels! I'm glad someone understands. And there's nothing wrong with being picky, I think. I've once been told that it's an honour to be a friend of a picky person, because often they're the people who have gone through so much that they can sniff bullshit from a distance. XD

And again, here I go with the long comments.
